Home/Social Dilemma

The social dilemma is a dynamic where an individual profits from selfishness unless everyone chooses the selfish alternative, in which case the whole group loses. Here individual rational choice - to optimize their pay off - leads to a situation where everyone is worse off. It can be said that individual rationality leads to collective irrationality. The social dilemma is behind many contemporary economic and social challenges from overfishing to traffic jams to air pollution and voting problems.
