Systems Innovation 2019 will be a conference on the topics of Complexity Thinking & Systems Change taking place in Barcelona at the end of March 2019. This is an open forum for those organizations and individuals applying complexity and systems thinking in various areas of economy, society, technology or environment towards enabling systems innovation and change – it is for anyone who feels that complexity or systems thinking is central to what they do and wishes to engage with peer organizations and individuals in open discussion and ideas exchange.

The event will bring together up to 10-20 organizations and some 100 individual participants, for an active weekend of presentations, panel discussions and brainstorming sessions on applying the ideas of complexity and systems thinking. The forum will be an opportunity to meet and exchange ideas and perspectives with others in an open space, to foster collaboration and awareness across the community, to hear from our speakers and brainstorm on specific issues of interest to participants.

This will be a weekend conference of presentations, workshops and open discussion sessions


This is for those interested in applying complexity thinking to tackling real-world issues and enabling systems change.


The event will take place in Spaces co-working located in the @22 innovation district in the center of Barcelona.


Two full day events set for the weekend of the 30 – 31st of March.



Bring your questions, imagination and enthusiasm for a topic of your interest because this will not be a passive weekend break, but a user generated event. We are mindful that flying people around costs the planet, it costs time, energy and money, we expect everyone to be actively engage in creating an event that has real value and outcomes that move the discussion on systems innovation forward – we have designed the conference to facilitate active engagement from all parties.


Guest speakers will present for 40 min each on the 15 different themes with time for Q&A

Panel Discussion

Panel discussions with moderators going in-depth on key topics of interest during 60 min sessions


Partner organizations will lead workshops & brainstorming sessions where you can bring your ideas to the table

Joss Colchester

Joss Colchester, founder of Complexity Labs, will present on how to leverage our newly forming information networks to innovate in whole systems enabling transformative change.

Systems Thinking

Systems thinking - what is it really and how can it help us to enable meaningful and lasting change

Philippe Vandenbroeck

Philippe Vandenbroeck of Shiftn will present on the topic of Systems Thinking and its application to design and innovation.

Systems Change

This topic explores the many different fields that are converging to create the new area of Systems Change

Practical examples of how systems and design thinking have been used to enable positive change

Diseño Disruptivo

Diseño Disruptivo will lead this topic on Systems Design presenting their experience in Mexico, Colombia, Peru and Brazil where they are bringing systems thinking and complexity into the daily practice of social innovators.

Social Innovation

Orit Gal will lead this theme on innovating in social systems through Social Acupuncture

Orit Gal

Orit Gal of Regent’s University will present on her innovative new approach to strategy in complex enviroments called Social Acupuncture which draws upon ideas from complexity theory and Easter philosophy.


Chris Lawer of Umio Health will present on transforming healthcare systems through his ecosystems approach

Chris Lawer

Chris will illustrate how Umio helps healthcare companies and organisations of all kind to sense, explore and capture new opportunities for growth and transformation through an ecosystem and complexity perspective.


The Financial Innovation Lab will join us to lead the theme of innovating in financial systems

Financial Innovation Lab

This theme deals with finance as a complex adaptive system, covering systems change and participatory design leverage points in the financial system where small interventions can create large shifts.


This theme will look at ways to rethink urban design based upon a whole systems approach

Emergent Design

This theme will deal with how to enable decentralized emergent organization through systems design

Danilo Vaz

Danilo Vaz will present his findings from working with decentralized organizations on how to design for distributed emergent organization.

Distributed Organizations

How to transition towards distributed forms of organization

Ricardo Zamora

Ricardo Zamora will talk on his work as a consultant where he works with large enterprises to transition them towards more agile distributed teams.

Public Sector

This theme will look at the application of systems thinking to the public sector

Joe Brewer

The ultimate aim of systems innovation should be sustainability in all its different shapes and forms, this topic will explore how complexity thinking can help us to transition towards a more sustainable world

This conference is a collaborative effort by a diversity of organizations that all have complexity or systems thinking at the core of what they do, the conference will be organized by Complexity Labs.


The event will take place in our co-working space which is located in an innovation district in the center of Barcelona – just 15 min walk from the historic center. Barcelona presents an ideal location, not just a great place to visit but also a center of design, architecture, a leading smart city, and one of Europe’s primary innovation hubs. Located just ten minutes walk from the mediterranean sea the event space is situated in the area of 22@Barcelona a new technology and innovation district and currently the largest urban renewal project in Europe.
