Homophily is the tendency of social actors with similar attributes(such as class, income, gender, race etc.) to cluster together within a social network. More formally, homophily may be defined as the clustering coefficient of a social network, which is a measure of the degree to which nodes in a social graph tend to cluster together. Social clustering can be understood by simply asking how many of the people that an individual is connected to are also connected to each other. Evidence suggests that in most real­world social networks, nodes tend to create tightly knit groups characterised by a relatively high density of ties and clustering. Homophily is a metric studied in the field of social network analysis in which it is also known as assortativity.
