Home/Downward Causation

Downward causation is when a higher level of organization determines the behavior and properties of a lower level of organisation. With downward causation processes at the lower level of the hierarchy are, to a greater or lesser extent, shaped by and act in accordance with the laws of the higher level. Downward causation can be defined as the inverse of upward causation where the behavior of the parts is determined the behavior of the whole.
