Inverse infrastructure is technology infrastructure that is created through bottom-up, user-driven, self-organizing processes in a distributed fashion. Examples of this include mesh telephone networks, water ATMs, Wikipedia, networks of privately-owned solar energy systems, and citywide Wi-Fi networks. These distributed technologies are called inverse infrastructure, as they have an inverse architecture to that of the centralized, professionalized, top-down industrial model.
