Home/Leverage Points

Leverage points are places within a complex system, such as a corporation, a city, or an ecosystem, where a small shift in one thing can produce big changes in everything. Within system dynamics, the potential scale of an intervention is seen as a function of the level on which one interacts with the organization. One the lowest level one can change the parts which result in the lowest leverage, above this one can change the behavior of the members, above this change the system’s structure. The highest leverage point in an organization is seen to lay in changing the model that it uses to interpret events, changing the paradigm can change the whole organization’s understanding of itself and its function, which can ultimately result in a complete transformation.
