The term hierarchy in systems theory describes the emergent pattern an organization where smaller subsystems form part of larger systems which in turn form part of larger suprasystems. Central to hierarchy theory is the attempt to provide a framework for considering relationships among levels and their ordering according to emergent processes that form nested, multi-leveled structures; also called integrative levels. This emergent, nested structure of integrative levels can be found in virtually all systems whether physical, chemical, biological, social or engineered
