Upward causation is a dynamic where the behavior of the parts in a system are seen to cause the behavior or functioning of the whole. With upward causation determination and causality move upward from the lower levels to the higher levels. This is in contrast to downward causation which is when a higher level of organization determines the behavior and properties of a lower levels.
