Home/Weak Ties

In the social sciences, weak ties, in contrast to strong ties, are connections between people within different social circles that have different characteristics and interact less frequently. As such, weak ties are bridging ties that expose people to new information and novel phenomena. Specifically, more novel information flows to individuals through weak rather than strong ties. Because a person’s close friends tend to move in the same circles that they do, the information they receive overlaps considerably with what one already knows.
